When markets sell off, opportunity doesn’t disappear, it can become harder to spot. LOUISE SANDBERG, Perpetual’s Head of Research for Australian equities, looks beneath the headlines to explore where value may be emerging across Australian equities
In this video podcast, Sandberg explains how periods of market stress can create opportunities for active stock pickers, particularly when businesses with financial strength are caught up in broader sector selloffs.
She also discusses the importance of bottom-up fundamental research, understanding what is already priced into a stock, and why Australian equities can continue to play an important role in investor portfolios.
Here's an excerpt from the interview:
“A stock can look cheap on a basic metric, like a price to earnings metric, but once you dig in, you realise that those earnings are not sustainable under periods of pressure.
“It’s about doing the work. It’s about walking the floors of the stores and factories, visiting the mines, talking to management, talking to suppliers, talking to competitors.
“Stocks tend to price in expectations long before they actually occur.
“The Australian market has great breadth. We have resource stocks, we have financials, we have a lot of companies that are more old economy and aren’t directly impacted by AI or are potentially even beneficiaries of AI.”
